It was an honor to illustrate a portrait of Randy Johnson for the cover of The Phoenix New Times, the month Randy "Big Unit" Johnson was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Read the article here.

Forbidden Man of Steel Print

Early in his career, times were hard. Superman's agent suggested doing some advertising work for a few overseas firms. This product was approved, even though no one knew what the product actually was. Once discovered, the advertisement was yanked, leaving this as the only remaining copy. (Apologies to Joe Shuster)

32 Portraits for The Advocate

Graham Smith illustrated 32 portraits for this months Double Issue of The Advocate // Stonewall 40th Anniversary.

Art Director Craig Edwards called with this epic assignment to illustrate 32 Pioneers who never knew a time before Stonewall, for their 40 Forty Under 40 feature. The catch was, all 32 portraits had to be completed in 11 days. Yikes! That's 3 finished illustrations per day, quite a fun challenge.

I drew all 32 portraits in an 11" x 14" Strathmore sketchbook with 60 lb paper.

First, I sketch the portrait using light blue pencil, striving to capture a likeness and map out the drawing. This initial sketch is the most difficult and time consuming step.

To finish, I draw with Pelikan ink using a Hunt 513EF nib and a #8 brush, right over the top of the pencil sketch, leaving the blue underdrawing visible in the final art.

Inking the final illustration is the fun part. Since all the major decisions were made in the sketch phase, I can simply free skate with the pen on top of the sketch, interpreting the line work and textures as I go.

Johnny Cash

I love it when Jose Reyes, Art Director of Paste Magazine calls, he always drops the sweetest assignments. He has a gift for matching the illustrator to the right project. In the November 2008 issue, Paste Magazine reviews Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison: Legacy Edition, and Jose wanted a full page portrait of Johnny Cash illustrated from that era, circa 1968.



I drew up a few pencil sketches. I wanted to provide Jose with different moods for this illustration, so he could have a choice.




Here's the Review page as printed, with all the graphics and logos. To make the illustration really match Paste's page layout, I sampled the aqua color from the "R" logo and painted the background behind his head with a bit of it. I also sampled the light red from the same logo and used that in the center of his face. With that done, I was pleased with the way it all turned out.
